Area Profile

Over the past ten years the population of the historic Triangle area bedroom community of Lillington located on the Cape Fear River south of Raleigh grew 46% and continues to grow exponentially.  Lillington is only 45 minutes driving time from Raleigh and North Carolina State University and 25 minutes from Ft. Bragg / Pop Air Force Base and Fayetteville, N.C.  The RDU International Airport is only an hour and a quarter away as is the Research Triangle Park.  The county airport is two miles away.  Over 1.6 million people live within a one-hour drive from Lillington.

Lillington has a University, Community College, is the County seat of government, and has a regional high-tech hospital scheduled to begin construction.

Nearby are the premier golf courses in Southern Pines and Pinehurst, and the beach is only a two-hour's drive down I-40.  Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains are a half-day's drive away.

Interstate I-95 is 13 miles to the east and will be even a shorter distance to the south once the under construction I-495 beltline is completed between Lillington and Fayetteville.  Additionally, I-440 is under construction south-east and south of Raleigh and furthermore, highways 401, 210 and 55 south are all scheduled for four-lane upgrade which will greatly speed up the driving access time to Raleigh.

From 1990 to 2000 Harnett County's population increased over 34.2% and was the 8th fastest growing county in the state.  The Economic Development Commission expects to see an increase in population of 14.3% from 2001 to 2006.

According to Mobility, April 2004 issue, "... the southeast was a popular destination.  North Carolina and South Carolina experienced their highest-ever percentage of inbound moves, both with 61.3 percent."  The findings were part of United Van Lines 27th annual "migration" study, which provides important data that can be used to interpret the nation's moving and relocation trends.
