Web Design 101 Think of your website as your home... the domain name is the address, hosting is the land, and your website is the online "home".

To have a web presence you need to register a domain name (your address), purchase hosting (the land), and create a website (your home).  Here are some helpful terms used when working with a website developer:

  • HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is the basic programming used to build your website.  It uses tags to tell web browsers how to present your information; text, graphics, photos, etc.  This is what your visitors will see and experience.
  • CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) defines the colors, layout, fonts, and more of your web pages.
  • PHP is used with databases to pull different information for your website visitors, it is used to create dynamic web pages.
  • CMS (Content Management System) lets you edit text and images on web pages without writing code.  The most popular CMS include WordPress, Joomla and Drupal.
  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the on-going process of getting your website to rank well with search engines.  Effective SEO will bring natural (organic) traffic to your website
  • PPC (pay-per-click) is an online marketing program to drive traffic to your website by bidding on specific search terms that are relative to your products and/or services.
